Elementals and the Art of Summoning

A Guide to Summon Elemental

Overview

Summoning an elemental is the basis of the power of an Elementalist. Whilst he gains a moderate amount of spells it is the casting – and utilization – of the four main elementals that will define him. Unlike demons or undead – the two other main summoning arts – elementals always obey the caster.

About the spell

Summon Elemental is the main power of the Elementalist. It has a number of limitations that will be dealt with here.

Firstly: range…100 feet + 10 feet per level. This is the maximum range that an Elementalist can control the elemental (if the elemental or the caster move outside this limit the elemental will stop – it does not mean the elemental disappears, it will resume when the Elementalist comes in range once more).

Secondly: duration…1 turn (10 minutes) + 5 rounds per level. This is the maximum duration that the elemental will exist. An elemental can be dispelled at any time by the caster. Important – if the caster wishes to prolong the duration of a summoned elemental he can cast Summon Elemental again (on the original elemental) and it will increase the duration accordingly.

Finally: area of effect…this depends on two factors: the level of the caster and a random percentile roll. The table below will indicate the size of the elemental summoned. Please note: there are exceptions to this table – for instance summoning a water elemental into a glass of water will not give you a small lake…it will give you a glass-of-water-sized elemental.

What the numbers mean

After cross-referencing the roll against the caster’s level you will get a number. This is the maximum size of the elemental; for example 40 is an elemental 40’ x 40’ x 40’ (essentially a cube with sides equal to 40 feet). The elemental can be stretched, flattened etc…so long as the raw materials allow it.

Elemental Classification

Unlike demons and undead an elemental can be put to any purpose as long as the materials allow it. For example an earth elemental can be used to move (like an elevator) through rock or act as a barrier against an opposing force. A water elemental can produce a pocket of air to aid breathing in water or act as propulsion for a boat or similar vessel. The only restrictions are the imagination of the caster and the duration and range of the summon elemental spell.
